Chapter 8

Savannah

Charles, George, Hunt, Clayton, Darren, and Henry rolled into Savannah at 4:15 the following afternoon. After unloading the horses from the train livestock car, they mounted up and stopped at the Sheriff’s office to check-in.

Hunt introduced everyone to Sheriff Holland Byrd and explained they were there to check in with the railroad construction.

Sheriff Byrd rolled his eyes and said, “Then I guess you’ve heard of the problems.”

“No,” Charles said, “What problems?”

“That railroad crew,” Sheriff Byrd said, “I’ve been out there twice already this week following up on complaints from the town people. There have been fights, broken furniture, and petty theft. Frankly, I’m getting sick of it, and I’m about to throw the whole group into jail.”

“I am the new owner of Crawford Construction Co.,” Charles said.

“The sign on the wagons says Feltner Construction,” Sheriff Byrd said as he glared at Charles.

“Adam Feltner was hung for murder along with several of his partners in crime. I bought the business from the courts. We have four construction jobs going on at the moment, and Savannah will be the fourth one we’ve visited to straighten out,” Charles explained.

“Well,” Sheriff Byrd said, “You’ll have your hands full with this group.”

“I should get a few of my deputies, and with the U.S. Marshals along for help, we may have enough muscle to make them pay attention,” Sheriff Byrd said.

“Oh, they’ll pay attention,” Charles said, “And I appreciate your help to clean the campsite up. If you’ll clean the camp up, and get rid of the troublemakers, I’ll gladly accompany you.”

A short time later, Sheriff Byrd and two tough-looking deputies were ready to ride out.

Deputy Horace Simms and Deputy Bill Clay accompanied Hunt, Clayton, Charles, George, and Henry.

The eight men rode in columns of two with Sheriff Byrd leading the way with Charles riding next to him.

They arrived at the campsite, and five men were sitting around a campfire, and there were a dozen empty whiskey bottles thrown around camp. Charles scanned the group and noticed Bugsy Browder seated on a log scowling as Charles dismounted and walked up.

“Who is Joe Briggs?” Charles asked.

“I am,” a large sprawling man said, holding a whiskey bottle, “And who the hell are you?”

“I’m Charles Crawford, and I own this construction company,” Charles answered.

“Are we celebrating a big day or what?” Charles asked.

“Hell,” Joe Briggs said, “Every day is a celebration,” as all of the others laughed.

“Mr. Briggs,” Charles said, “This is indeed a day of celebration.”

“Let me introduce Henry Rubbles,” Charles said as he pointed to him, “He’s your replacement; you are fired for drinking on the job.”

“What,” he said as he stood and stumbled slightly, “We always drink on the job, Mr. Feltner always allowed it,” he shouted.

“Mr. Feltner was hung along with several of his friends,” Charles said, “I own the company now, and I don’t allow drinking on the job.”

Joe Briggs was a large man; he stood around 6’4” and weighed over 250 lbs.

“You are the camp foreman,” Charles said, “And yet you condone bad behavior, poor work performance, and bad behavior in town.
